Review: Cinder by Marissa Mayer

cinder.jpgSo I kind of got this weird notion in my head the other day. I drove to the library and decided to get a pile of teen fiction to burn through over the next few weeks. I don’t know what possessed me to do this, as BELIEVE ME I have plenty of books to read at home, but what’s done is done and now I have a lot of reading to do.

I started out with Cinder. I kind of like this “re-imagined fairy tales” sub-genre of YA fiction that has been rising to popularity in the last few years. Without knowing anything about this book other than looking at the cover and deducing that it’s a re-imagined version of Cinderella, I dove in.

Right away, I was confused by the fact that heroine Cinder is a cyborg mechanic. I was like, what fresh hell is this? But it didn’t take me long to get into the plot. It’s loosely based on its namesake fairy tale. You know, girl heroine, evil stepmother, prince, ball, etc. The glass slipper is replaced with a prosthetic leg.

I think (??) this is the first in a trilogy. I mean, aren’t all YA stories part of a trilogy these days? Anyway, I’ll pick up the next one on my next sweep of the library.
